11:00 Worship Service: The Blessing and the Curse of the Maternal Ideal. Rev. Ann Fuller

It is right and fitting to honor our loved ones who nurture us and help us become competent, compassionate, independent adults. The archetype of the mother provides us with an idea of what maternal love should be, but it carries with it risks about which we should also be aware. Mother's Day is a sweet and loving gesture to recognize the labor of love that is motherhood, but for many it is also a bittersweet day and for some extremely painful. We will explore the archetypal mother and how this image affects us as a society and as individuals as we honor and recognize all the people in our lives who provide the nurturance we need.

11:00 Worship Service: Thinning the Stew, Again. Rev. Dr. Gregory Wilson

As we heard the woman at the well resist a call to move past her shame and experience freedom, and Savati's steadfast loyalty to his social position of an untouchable, we are confronted with our own beliefs and habits that prevent us from living out our best dreams; we long to celebrate our lives as we see them in our minds, and yet have a difficult time living that celebration, I am reminded of Rainer Maria Rilke's First Elegy. Below I have included some lines from the piece.

Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels'  hierarchies?
And so I force myself, swallow and hold back the surging call of my dark sobbing.
Perhaps we can call on a tree we noticed on a slope somewhere
and passed in our daily walk – the streets of a city we knew, or a habit’s dumb fidelity,
a habit that liked our space, and so it stayed.

The sermon will focus on moving past our "fidelity" to a habit that found a place in our lives toward a loyalty to affirming ourselves and living in that celebration.
